The hidden treasures

Last Updated 21 July 2014, 18:08 IST

Every now and then we hear of people searching for hidden treasures and all the measures people employ to discover them.

Some eccentrics and tricksters take the gullible to any extent either for money or power or a taste for the esoteric flights of fancy.

There are also people who snoop in the wake of such searchers trying to find out if it were a ploy to put off those on their trail to unearth their ill-gotten goods. We also hear of people who get maddened by the lure of gold and hunt for the precious metal in whichever place it is rumoured to be found.

For them it does not matter if it were in an inaccessible place fraught with untold dangers; because all that attracts them is the gold that is to be found.

They would spend their time and energy in finding it and dream of making it big. Such desires can get hold of any person, in whatever state of life he may be and he would have any number of excuses to tell you why he is searching for it.

He may even say that he is not seeking it for himself but for his family or he may even say that he is doing it for the poor. In such cases they do not even mind trying to bribe God himself!

Jesus has also spoken of such treasure-seekers and he says: where your treasure is there also your heart is! What do you constantly think of? Is it power or success at all cost? Then your treasure is precisely in that.

Or are your constant thought only of sex and gratification of sex or drug abuse seeking to get a feeling of being on high?

Then that kind of selfishness is your treasure. We know all these do not last long. The power you may enjoy today may be lost tomorrow and somebody else has it.

Your bodily strength will wane and you become a stumbling cripple in a short time and the time to quit these mortal shackles may not be far away? Then what are you going to do? Has all your dreams come to an end? Should you change tracks and run elsewhere or change tackles and fish elsewhere?

Again Jesus says: do not try to store up your treasures where robbers may rob you and leave you empty handed or stash your treasures in a place where your treasure is eaten up by rust, dust, moth or agents that corrupt material things.

Rather you should gather up your treasures in heaven where no robbers can rob and where no corruption can enter in.

Let your treasures be rooted in God who is permanent and never ending. He says that whatever good you do to the least ones you did it to him and your reward is assured.

The assurance is given by God and for that assurance we do not even need any guarantee because the guarantee is God himself who is Truth!
