Govt forced to withdraw Bill

Last Updated 21 July 2014, 19:01 IST

The State government was forced to withdraw the Karnataka Tank Development Authority Bill, 2014,  within hours of introducing it on Monday afternoon.

The bill, presented by the minister for Minor Irrigation Shivaraj Tangadagi, was flayed by the Opposition and Congress MLAs for being ‘incomplete’ and ‘hasty.’

Congress MLA K R Ramesh Kumar disputed the title of the bill itself and said it should be renamed as the Karnataka Tank Protection Authority bill.

“Do you intend to allow construction of a five star hotel in these tank beds and call it development?” he said.

The BJP members said the bill had several ambiguities pertaining to the fate of tanks in other municipalities.

“While the bill does not consider the tanks under BBMP and BDA jurisdiction, what about those that are under other municipalities and urban areas,” BJP MLA K G Bopaiah asked.
