Sand smuggler mows down TN cop, held

In a shocking incident, a head constable attached to Vellore district headquarters in Tamil Nadu was mowed down by a tractor for trying to prevent illegal sand mining in that area even as the State police arrested the prime accused involved in the murder immediately.

Police sources said main opposition party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Councillor Senbagavalli's son Suresh, who drove the tractor, was arrested at Thiruvalam village near Katpadi. The cop, Kanagaraj, attached to the Thakkolam Police Station, had questioned the illegal sand mining at Kosasthalai river, when the sand miners mowed him down using the heavy vehicle.

The driver abandoned the tractor and fled the scene. The police, which registered a case of murder, acted swiftly to arrest Suresh who they identified as the driver who mowed down the policeman.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha strongly condemned the killing and directed the police to take stringent action against those responsible for it. Leaders of various political parties condemned the murder and wanted the State Government to take stern action against the culprits.
