A group of students of St Raymond’s College, Vamanjoor, on Tuesday staged a protest against second PU student who had filed a sexual harassment case against their Kannada lecturer and another section of the students staged a protest against the lecturer.

.
Meanwhile, the management of the college defended the accused lecturer.

College Principal Sr Cicilia said “Lecturer Harish has been teaching in the college for the last 12 years. This is for the first time that a student has levelled sexual harassment allegations against him.”

“We have a counsellor in the college. The student could have informed the counsellor if she was facing any sexual harassment in the college. At the same time, the college has 18 teaching staff, of which 14 are women. She could have brought the issue to the notice of the female lecturers. The girl had accused of less marks. However, in the recently held unit test, she has scored 98 marks in Kannada. In the last annual exam, she had scored highest marks in Kannada (77),” said the principal.

Following the complaint on the behaviour of the said student who had filed complaint, the lecturers conducted an inquiry on Monday and she was found guilty and was asked to write an apology letter.

However, in the evening, she had filed a complaint against her lecturer.

St Raymond’s Group of Institutions Corporate Manager Sr Mariate said: “We are neither in favour of lecturer Harish nor in favour of the student who has levelled allegations. We will extend our cooperation to the police. A parent teachers meeting was convened and the issue was discussed with the parents. As per the decision taken in the meeting, it has been decided to constitute a committee to conduct an inquiry in the college. If Harish has committed any crime, then we will not hesitate to take action against him.”

In the meantime, lecturer Harish is still at large and the police are looking for him.

Complainant student’s brother asked why the lecturer has to abscond if he had not committed any crime.

“To ensure that no female student should undergo any sexual harassment in the college unlike my sister, we had filed a complaint. It is a tragedy that the management is supporting the lecturer,” he added.

He said that his sister had attempted to commit suicide on Monday.

“The lecturer had asked my sister to meet him in a lodge. He used to make her to wait in the college even after college hours. He used behave indecently. As she was scared to inform the family members, she had attempted to commit suicide. In fact, she had asked me to admit her to some other college after completing I PUC. I didn’t know that she was facing a serious problem in the college.”
