Choosing the right professional college

Last Updated 23 July 2014, 15:15 IST

When one is on crossroads of career, the decision taken today decides the course of future life, writes Akash Chaudhry .

Welcome to the admission season, in addition to summers and winters, autumn, spring and rains we Indians have now acclimatized to a new season the “Admission Season”.  In this climate one get’s to savor enticing advertisements from various private colleges imparting professional education in contrast with some slit throat cutoffs of elite nationalized institutes like IITs, NITs, AIIMS, NLIUs and the list goes long.

Since long, engineering has been the most preferred & “rest assured” choice for a professional career. It has been time and again proved that engineers are highly versatile when it comes to identifying employment. India has witnessed technocrats getting into multifarious career ventures, from creating a milk revolution, may be becoming a politician, an author, a cinematographer, a financial maestro, a cricketer or even a magician engineers of India have a huge spread in all verticals and across all horizontals.

Getting an engineering degree was once like a dream achieved. But with mushrooming of so many institutes pan India The story beyond engineering college is not very encouraging these days because lucrative jobs do not come automatically to the fresh pass out engineers from many of these colleges.

A very important question to be answered is the reason why are these many unemployable engineers churned out year on year? Opportunities definitely follow those students who select the right academic slot. Choices are the hinges of destiny, said Pythagoras. Especially when one is on cross roads of career and the decision taken today decides the course of future life.

Mechanical, Mechatronics, EEE, Electrical, Computer Science, IT or something else? There are hundred plus varieties of engineering branches and sub branches available in the prospectus to select from. Deciding upon the right engineering branch is too tricky for both students and their parents. “It is just like medicines; every medicine cures but this happens only when the doctor reads the symptoms rightly and prescribe the right medicine. Likewise all engineering branches lead to success – what is required is to have the right match.”

Nowadays the most common trend to opt out for an engineering branch is to look at job statistics. This approach can’t be out rightly negated but the only pitfall with this approach is that we make a major life decision based on guesswork and the future. Given today’s rapid advancements in science and technology, predictions of what the job market will look like a decade or even half a decade when the student will be graduating out are likely to be inaccurate. So it’s a better deal to stay in the present and create rather speculate future from the present.

The results for JEE(Main) as well as Advanced) are out and the counseling session has started at various institutes where in the students will fill their choice in order of their preferences and wait for the destiny.

But a diligent homework ad due care while filling the choices is a must for the parents and students so that they don’t have to repent on the results. Given below are few points to be kept in the back of the mind while attending the counseling session or filling up the choices. Parameters to consider during counsellingn Student’s Aim - Job / Higher Studies / MBAn Vintage of the chosen Collegen Placement History of the  Collegen Stream / Branch for which the chosen College is famous  Student’s Aim
