Safety norms for school vehicles

Last Updated 23 July 2014, 19:41 IST

The transport department is launching a drive to strictly implement its safety guidelines on school vehicles. The department, as part of its enforcement, plans to issue safety guidelines, reiterating that all schools should follow them strictly.

As per the guidelines, it will be mandatory for schools to form School Cab Safety Committee with parents, school teachers, cab operators as members.

The committee will meet from time to time to ensure that all children are safely ferried.

Further, school busses should have details of every child in the bus including his/her class, their parents’ names, phone numbers, house address, details of bus routes etc.

The list should also be with the concerned school authorities.

There should be an escort in the bus from school, preferably a teacher, to ensure that all safety measures are duly followed by the driver.

Transport Commissioner K Amaranarayana chaired a meeting on Wednesday. RTOs and other officials of the department were in attendance.

It was decided that the 14-point safety guidelines will be circulated again to all schools so that they can ensure compliance by buses or vehicles owned or hired by them.

Officials said the department had, in the past, seized more than 50 vehicles owned by various schools for flouting the safety guidelines.

The drive will start again to inspect vehicles.
