Tragedy struck the family of Najma Bano, a resident of Danilimda in Old Ahmedabad, early Wednesday morning when her daughter and son-in-law were crushed to death by a speeding car. The car was driven by a 14-year-old boy.

The family was sleeping outside their hutment in the slum when the car hit them. Four others were injured in the incident. Police later detained the teenager and seized the car.

Yet to come to terms with the tragedy, Najma Bano told Deccan Herald: “ The car came speeding, dragging people with it. Both its tyres were damaged, yet, he managed to speed away.” The family called the emergency service number 108, but by the time the ambulance arrived, her daughter and son-in-law had died.

The car also rammed into a few hutments, injuring four people. The teen car driver managed to flee the spot in his damaged vehicle. He was later picked up by the police.

“The witnesses have given their statement about the boy driving the car. We are trying to find out whether his parents knew that he had taken the car out. If there is evidence against him, we can arrest him,” said Police Inspector M N Sheikh.

There is shock and grief in the area, dotted with slums, where Muslims are observing the holy month of Ramzan. The accused stays barely a km from the accident spot.
