Rumblings in Maharashtra Congress unit on Thursday reached the national capital, as dissident leader Narayan Rane aired his grievances against Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to party vice president Rahul Gandhi.

In an hour-long meeting on Thursday evening, Rane explained to Gandhi the reasons behind his resignation from the Chavan cabinet, while he is also understood to have given a report on the ground situation in Maharashtra in the wake of the upcoming Assembly elections.

“I told him about the reasons for my resignation from the council of ministers,” he told reporters. Rahul assured Rane that he would discuss the issues he had raised with party president Sonia Gandhi and try to address them. Chavan and state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre are expected to meet Sonia Gandhi on Friday to discuss the issue, while Rane is also likely to meet the Congress President on the same day.

The party appeared to be taking a lenient view at the rebels in the wake of a “tough elections” in Maharashtra.

Upset at Congress leadership not ‘honouring its commitment’ to make him Chief Minister, Rane quit the Maharashtra Cabinet on Monday.
