Take action against Sena MP: Oppn

Opposition parties on Thursday demanded action against the Shiv Sena MP who tried to force-feed a man fasting on Ramzan even as the saffron party mounted a stout defence of its leaders.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that Speaker Sumitra Mahajan order an inquiry against Rajan Vichare who was seen shoving a chapati in the mouth of a catering supervisor at the New Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi.

“We are requesting you to take immediate action on the Maharashtra Sadan incident. If no action is taken such incidents would continue to recur and there would be no discipline,” Kharge said referring to a letter given by a section of the Opposition parties to the Speaker on Wednesday evening.

Besides Kharge, the letter was signed by Tariq Anwar (NCP), Jaiprakash Narayan Yadav (RJD), P Karunakaran (CPM), N K Premachandran (RSP), E T Muhammad Basheer (IUML) and Jose K Mani (Kerala Congress-M).

Shiv Sena, meanwhile, mounted a strong defence wall around the action of its members and declared that the party would not remain a silent spectator if any person tries to “malign” the party using his religion.

“Shiv Sena respects all religions but will not tolerate if anyone tries to flaunt his religious affiliation for intimidation. One should keep his religion in his heart and at his home. But if someone wears it on sleeve and tries to malign Shiv Sena by playing politics over it, we will not tolerate it,” said an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana.

It launched a scathing attack on the “poor quality of service rendered in Maharashtra Sadan by the management”. Shiv Sena was also planning to give a breach of privilege notice against the Resident Commissioner of Maharashtra and officials at the Sadan for “insulting” elected representatives.
