The Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police registered an FIR on Thursday after the Indian Air Force (IAF)  filed a complaint against unknown miscreants who fraudulently withdrew large sums of money from the salary accounts of over 40 of its personnel.

“It is intimated that a large number of cases have been reported by IAF officers having defence salary package accounts with the State Bank of India, stating fraudulent withdrawals of large amounts of money from their salary accounts,” the FIR read.

Tejveer Singh, Commanding Officer of Provost and Security Unit Wing Commander of the IAF, had filed the complaint. IAF officials said they took the step after more than 40 such cases emerged in recent months.

Interestingly, there are similar cases in the Army too. The IAF had shifted a bulk of its officers’ bank accounts to the State Bank of India between 2009 and 2010. “Since these transactions involve large sums of money, it is likely to have a direct effect on the morale of officers.

Keeping this in mind, there is an urgent need to start investigation into these fraudulent withdrawals and to stop such transactions immediately,” the complaint said.
