Extortionist posing as militant held in Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an extortionist who would threaten elected village representatives and extract money from them using a toy pistol in Pulwama district of south Kashmir.

A toy pistol and a tear smoke grenade have been recovered from the alleged extortionist Aijaz Ahmad Shah who was apprehended in a joint operation with Army and Central Reserve Police Force on Saturday evening, a police official told Deccan Herald.

According to the official, the police received information that a person posing as militant was threatening village headmen last week. “Police started investigation in this regard and activated its sources in the area,” an official said.

On a tip off, Shah a resident of Tral, Pulwama, 40 kms from here, was apprehended by the security forces on Saturday evening. Shah, according to the official, has confessed to extorting money from people after posing as militant.
