Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the communally volatile situation in the Saharanpur district of western Uttar Pradesh, which has been placed under curfew since two groups clashed, leaving three dead and several others injured.

Singh held a half-an-hour discussion with Modi and briefed him about the initiatives taken by the Home Ministry, like deploying 600 paramilitary personnel to assist the Akhilesh Yadav government in containing the communal flare-up between the two communities, which began over construction on a dispute piece of land.

The home minister also had telephonic conversation with the UP chief minister, and advised him to take strict action against the culprits to bring back normalcy in the western part of the state, which has been seeing frequent rioting of late.

The Centre believes that the state administration had not taken prompt action, which allowed the tensions to escalate.
