With two more critically-wounded school children breathing their last in the past 24 hours, the death toll in the catastrophic school bus and train accident near Masaipet in the Medak district of Telangana has risen to 18.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 11-year-old Vaishnavi of Islampur succumbed to her injuries at the Yashoda Hospital here, where all the 20 injured Kakatiya Techno schoolchildren were admitted.

Her father, Sanjeev Goud, had been waiting for a miracle. “I was hoping that my daughter will walk out of that hospital like the other seven who were discharged,” said a distraught Sanjeev. Doctors had earmarked  Vaishnavi’s case as extremely critical. Earlier on Monday, seven-year-old Tarun died.

“The condition of Prashant (6) and Varun Goud (7) is also very bad,” Dr A Lingaiah, Director of Medical Services at the Yashoda Hospital, said. Nithusha and Sarat are two other children who experts are currently watching closely.

Other casualties in the accident, however, have seen improvement. Nabira Fatima, Darshan Goud, Harish, Abhinandu, Sirisha, Shivkumar and Sravani have been shifted to the regular ward from the intensive care unit.
