Telangana govt approves changes to state emblem

Last Updated 29 July 2014, 20:34 IST

The Telangana government is all set to change the state emblem after the earlier logo was found wanting in several pertinent issues.

Much to the embarrassment of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, his first signature on an official file was regarding the official emblem of the state government.

The old logo, designed by noted Telangana artist Laxman Aley, has a Kakatiya arch in the circular emblem in green colour with an image of the Charminar at the centre. The words Telangana government is inscribed in English, Telangana Sarkar in Urdu and Telangana Prabhutvam in Telugu.

The state BJP unit, however, objected to the addition of the image of Charminar, which it claims is a religious structure and a social activist from Haryana has sought the intervention of the Delhi High Court, as he believes the logo is against the law.

With another petition seeking directions from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, the state cabinet has approved changes in the logo bringing the words “Satyameva Jayate” in Devanagari just below the national emblem–the Lion Capital–from the bottom of the logo.

The old emblem has “Satyameva Jayate” below the green-coloured circular logo separating the Lion Capital and placing it far away from the top.

The arch of the Kakatiya dynasty in the old emblem is also flawed as it was the artist’s photoshop version. The arch of the Kakatiyas is different and has a specific design and is very popular.

With several artists from the region identifying the minute but important details missing from the “Orugallu Thoranam”, the final version has a different but original arch in the logo.

There was also a suggestion from few Urdu scholars that the inscription in Urdu should have been “Hukumat-e-Telangana” rather than Telangana Sarkar, however no change was made in this regard.

The Telangana government ordered all the 10 district collectors to immediately put to use the new logo.

The state government is also planning to construct Kakatiya arches at the entrance of the state secretariat.
