Ex-corporator held for Saharanpur riots

An ex-corporator, who had fuelled the Saharanpur communal violence, has been arrested along with his accomplices late on Wednesday night.

Moharram Ali alias Pappu and seven others were charged with rioting, destroying public property and inciting communal passion.

According to the police officials here, the former coporator incited his supporters to attack members of a particular community over a land dispute.

He also led an attack on Qutubsher police station in which a constable, Sansarpal Malik, was shot  and wounded. Malik is now battling for his life at the hospital.

Another ex-corporator Masood and some others were also among the attackers, police said.
Officials said that the interrogation of Ali and others revealed that ‘outsiders’ had played a crucial role in fomenting trouble in Saharanpur.

The police were conducting raids to nab the other accused. Though the police had rounded up 50 people in connection with the violence, none of the accused persons named have been arrested. The police have also not been able to recover weapons, sources said.

Meanwhile, Saharanpur is limping back to normalcy which lead to  relaxation of curfew for longer duration.

A ‘Peace March’ was also taken out in the town on Thursday in which members of both communities, senior police and civil officials participated, officials said.

Three persons were killed and over two dozens others injured in the communal clashes in the town on Saturday morning.

Dozens of shops, buses and houses had been torched by the rampaging mobs.
The violence erupted after some members of a community tried to prevent the other community from erecting a wall on a ‘disputed’ land near a graveyard at Qutubsher locality in the town.
