Eamcet counselling runs into trouble

Last Updated 31 July 2014, 20:28 IST

The State Council of Higher Education’s (SCHE) declaration of counseling dates for the candidates who have cleared Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (Eamcet) has run into rough weather with the government of Telangana refusing to take part in the process.

The certificate verification process is scheduled to be held from August 7 to 23 in 57 centers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Council has the responsibility of supervising the admission process in both the states and common capital area as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2013.

It made the announcement after conducting a meeting with the officials of the two states. However, the Principal secretary of higher education in Telangana and a few other members abstained from the meeting.

Telangana Higher Education Minister Jagadeesh Reddy said the announcement has nothing to do with students of his state. “No Telangana student will attend the verification process.

Let the Andhra Pradesh students attend the counseling,” he said. He argued that the Telangana government’s case requesting the Supreme Court to delay the admission process is coming up for hearing on August 4.

Action will be initiated only after the SC gives directions,” he said. Meanwhile, SCHE said it will also approach the Supreme Court on Friday seeking directions on the issue.

The council, which was earlier known as APSCHE, says that it is the competent authority to organise EAMCET counseling and will approach the apex court to complain about the delay in conducting of counseling. “The SC never asked us to delay counseling. So, there are no legal hurdles to go ahead with at least verification,” SCHE chairman Prof L Venugopal Reddy said.
