Night patrol policemen arrested three men and seized three kg of gold biscuits and Rs 41 lakh in cash from them near Race Course Road in the early hours of Thursday.

The police gave the names of the suspects as Nataraj, 40, Balasubramaniam, 38, and Ramkumar, 40, all from Coimbatore. The policemen, during a routine check, had stopped an auto-rickshaw with three men sitting inside. The men were asked to get down.

When the vehicle was checked, the police found a few huge bags. A closer look revealed that the bags contained gold biscuits and cash. The men were then taken to the police station and questioned about the source of the gold and cash.

The suspects claimed to be merchants from Coimbatore and said they had come to Bangalore to purchase gold and intended to return to their hometown.

A senior police officer said, “The men claimed that they purchased the gold from a jewellery shop on Avenue Road, but when we questioned the shopkeeper concerned, he denied it. They failed to produce valid documents on the purchase of gold or cash.”

The officer further said, “The men have been arrested for unauthorised possession of gold and cash. They are yet to be interrogated in detail. A robbery cannot be ruled out. No conclusions can be made as of now.”
