The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Centre and the states on a PIL seeking direction to preserve wetland and to restrain construction on them.
A bench of Justices H L Dattu and S A Bobde also issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government on the petitioner’s plea seeking CBI probe into the collapse of a multi-storeyed building allegedly constructed on wetland in Chennai. Forty-two people lost their lives in the accident.
In their petition, advocates R Krishna Murthy and N Rajaraman also asked that a compensation of Rs 25 lakh be awarded to the families of those who lost their lives in the June 28 incident, in which an 11-storey under-construction residential complex on the outskirts of Chennai crumbled.
