SC to look into CBI chief meeting 2G accused

Last Updated 02 September 2014, 20:44 IST

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it would look into “disturbing and explosive” materials relating to frequent meetings between CBI Director Ranjit Sinha and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) officials at his residence here.

The company is facing charges in the 2G spectrum allocations scam case. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing NGO CPIL, submitted that he had come across some disturbing and explosive materials with regard to the CBI director last (Monday) night. He started reading a note prepared on the issue containing his charges against Sinha.

Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, appearing for one of the 2G case accused, intervened to point out that a newspaper had already published a report. He also objected to the trend of presenting a note to the court without any responsibility. He urged the court to ask Bhushan to state, whatever he wanted to submit, in an affidavit. To this, Bhushan expressed surprise by saying that he was not aware how the materials in his possession was leaked to the newspaper. He also said that his email could have been hacked or leak could have taken place at his office as he did not supply the material to anyone.

A bench of Justices H L Dattu, S A Bobde and A M Sapre stopped Bhushan from reading his note in the open court and asked him to submit the materials, including the copy of visitors’ register, in a sealed cover.

Jethmalani also contended that Sinha was performing his duty well but all kinds of allegations are being levelled. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for Sinha, submitted that all sorts of allegations were being made to destroy the institution.

Bhushan, who appeared for the NGO on whose plea 122 licences were cancelled in 2011, pointed out that though an application was pending in the court for recusal of Sinha from the case, the “disturbing” things have come out in the open.  He also said a decision to keep DIG Santosh Rastogi out of the investigation was rectified on the court's intervention.
