Bharatiya Janatha Party MLA from Shahdara, Jitender Singh Shunty, was shot at outside his house in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar by an unidentified assailant early on Wednesday morning. Three shots were fired from short range, but the 53-year-old managed to escape unhurt, police said.

The attack was captured by CCTV cameras installed in the area, but the accused was wearing a helmet due to which his identity is yet to be established. “The CCTV footage also revealed that the accused was roaming around in the area for about 20-25 minutes before the attack,” said Sanjay Beniwal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range).

The sequence of events began at about 5:30 am when the man repeatedly rang the bell of the house. Shunty asked his wife Manjeet to open the door, but she complained of joint pain. After four-five minutes, Shunty himself went to the door where the man requested to get some documents attested.

Without doubting the intentions of a stranger wearing a helmet, Shunty opened the door. He took the documents and was going back inside the house when the accused grabbed his neck. In the ensuing scuffle, Shunty tried to overpower the man.

The MLA claimed that the man kept on threatening against raising an alarm. “The attacker pulled me towards him and I thought he was trying to kidnap me. So, I resisted his attempt. Then, suddenly, he put a hand in his pocket and whipped out a country-made pistol,” Shunty said.
