Doon School keen on having more City students

Keen to recruit more students from Bangalore and from South India as a whole, The Doon School based in Dehradun is conducting an outreach programme in various cities in the southern region this year.

Dr Peter McLaughlin (in picture), the headmaster of elite institution who was in the City on Friday said: “Although we have students from various parts of the country, we are particularly interested in students in South India. We are keen to further the demographic diversity of students in the school.”

Presently, The Doon School has 12 students from Bangalore and a number of others from other southern cities, he said. The outreach programme will comprise a meeting with the alumni of the school in various southern cities. After Bangalore, McLaughin will visit Chennai and Hyderabad in November. In early 2015, he will visit Pune and Kolkata.

When asked about his opinion on the recent disturbing incidents in schools – like the rape of a minor girl in a Bangalore school and the ragging of a student at an elite school in Gwalior – Peter said: “There is no silver bullet to tackle the problem. However, greater vigilance by school authorities can go a long way in ensuring safety of children. Complacency is the biggest enemy of this effort,” he said.
