Recently, the city was host to Hindi poets from across the country. The celebration was ‘Bharatiya Kavita Bimb’, a two-day Kavi Sammelan organised by the Hindi Academy, Delhi Government’s Department of Art, Culture and Languages. It was a delight for the lovers of the poetic tradition, as over 37 poets from 20 Indian languages came together or the festival, which was a unique tribute to Indian poetry.

The celebration was a part of the Hindi Diwas, which is celebrated each year on September 14. The event was just an attempt by the 33-year-old Hindi Academy to promote the richness of the Indian languages, its poetic evolution and how they complement each other.

On the occasion Dr Harisuman Bisht, secretary of Hindi Academy said, “Hindi Academy tried to get the entire famous languages poet together. Somewhere we were successful in our work. These languages belong to the ‘Ashtam Suchi’ in our country. The event had a very good journey so far as everyone waits for it.”

The academy came into existence in 1981 with an aim to promote Hindi as a language in Delhi. Its main role is to highlight Hindi literature and the cultural legacy it has been carrying with it. Under the aegis of the Art, Culture and Language Department of the Delhi government, the academy plays a creative role in spreading the literature
and culture of Hindi and other languages.

The Academy is looked by a team of officials comprising the president who forms a working committee which remains operational for two years and thereafter, it is changed. The committee comprises 25 members which includes well known authors and journalists.
This year, the academy was in the news over a controversy that erupted when it was recognised that instead of the name of noted former vice-president and Hindi poet Ashok Chakradhar, the name of Aam Aadmi Party leader and poet Kumar Vishwas was printed on the invitation card of the Academy’s event.
