Last Updated 10 September 2014, 18:40 IST

People in the Dalit Colony at Raghavapur village in the taluk are reported to be suffering from a strange disease for the past two weeks.

Symptoms like fever, headache, cough and cold have been reported among more than 200 people out of the 1,900 population in the Colony. Many of those affected are visiting the Begur government hospital and nursing homes in the town for treatment.

But the symptoms are not subsiding. At least two persons in every family has been affected. The medical officer at the Ayurvedic hospital in the village is not even aware of the problem as she visits the village only twice a week. People in the village suspect that an epidemic may have been caused due to the new water flowing into the canal of River Kabini.
