The stage was flooded with warm light as one college after another took to the ramp at the South Zone preliminary of Metrolife Fashion Show Season 4. Twenty six colleges  battled it out at Oxford Educational Institutions on Saturday for a place at the finale, which will be held on September 20 at Dayananda Sagar Institutions.

The show was presented by Reliance Trends, India’s largest destination. It was conceptualised by Mithilesh Nyathappa and emceed by Amar Prabhu. DJ Bharath ground out some groovy tunes for the audience. Sandalwood actor Prajwal Devaraj was one amongst the four judges who were at the event. Actress Meghana Raj, model and filmmaker Karan Rao and designer Jason Cheriyan were the other judges.
Students were given the theme of Indian or Western and they pulled out their best for the event.

The girls of Mount Carmel College, who were one of the last to perform but stunned the audience with their grace and coordination on stage, were voted the winners for the evening. Dressed in bright shades of pink, the girls said their collection is called ‘Pink Revolution’.

“We always go for Western wear so we thought we would do ethnic designs this time,” said Meghana. Their collection included anarkalis, lehengas and ‘saris’.
Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology, MG Road, won the second place for their designs inspired by aghoris. Dressed in stripped gowns, covered in vibhuti and rudraksha malas, the students walked the ramp with ease. Stephin, a student at the college, said, “We mainly used jamkkalam and muslin to enhance the design.”
The Oxford College of Science brought a bit of mythology to the stage for their self-designed collection of ‘vampires in love’.

Black and red dominated the collection and materials like velvet, laces and nets were seen on stage. They will also be seen at the finale. Dhanya Mohan said, “Most people think vampires are scary but they don’t realise that they are capable of love as well. We want to get rid of this misconception.”

The consolation prize went to Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering for their Western-themed outfits and confident walk on the ramp. Dressed in colourful tights, stilletto, half pants and stoles, the students oozed confidence.

Two colleges decided to go eco-friendly and came up with unique collections. The students of CB Bhandari Jain College were wearing colourful dresses made from paper and plastic.

“We wanted to depict the different moods of nature and used material like tissue, plastic, sand and chart paper to cover ourself,” said Naina. Students of PES Degree College also used waste material but had a theme of ‘sweet revenge’. Some of the other themes were ‘under the sea’ by St Joseph’s College of Commerce and ‘gothic masquerade ball’ by Surana College. National Law School of India University made a bold statement with its collection titled ‘Walk of Life’. Students from Surana College and Sambhram College entertained the audience with a few dance moves.

The winners of the Grand finale will receive gift vouchers from Reliance Trends, India’s largest fashion destination. Their stores offer more than 100 Indian and international brands that are the best in apparel and accessories across 170 stores in more than 100 cities.
