Last Updated 17 September 2014, 17:18 IST

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi espousing his dream of setting up 100 smart cities, Volvo Buses said that it sees opportunities here for its fuel-efficient and hybrid buses which run on electricity and diesel. The company said that it is in talks with a few state transport undertakings to encourage adoption of hybrid vehicles.

Volvo Buses India MD V R V Sriprasad said, “The next phase in the bus industry will be marked by building smarter cities, increased urbanisation, alternative technologies and resulting higher demand for better quality of mobility. Volvo is prepared and ready to partner all stakeholders to take the country forward on this road.”

Volvo hopes to be in 20 cities by the year-end from 15 currently. It also launched a Volvo 8400 city bus on Wednesday.

It has a market share of 82 per cent in the premium coaches and over 50 per cent in city buses. Localisation currently stands at 30-45 per cent.
