Parents flay govt inaction on RTE quota

Last Updated 17 September 2014, 21:08 IST

Parents of the 26 children who were denied seats under the 25 percent quota of the Right to Education (RTE) Act have blamed the State government and the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for their lack of action in fighting against school managements both in the Karnataka High Court as well as the Supreme Court.

The parents staged a protest under the aegis of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in front of the office of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) here on Wednesday, demanding that their children be immediately admitted in schools.

The Supreme Court had stayed the order of the Karnataka High Court directing the schools concerned to immediately admit the students.

‘Lack of responsibility’

In a letter submitted to K Anand, director, Primary Education, DPI, the parents said:
“There was lack of proper action from the State government both in the PIL at High Court of Karnataka and in the SLP filed in the Supreme Court. This shows a serious lack of responsibility and negligence on the part of the GoK in general and DPI in particular.”

They also demanded immediate and serious efforts to vacate the stay in the Supreme Court. Parents alleged that police personnel were deployed to break the protest, and they were forced out of the DPI’s premises.
