In the third such incident in over two weeks, a security guard thwarted a robbery bid by firing seven rounds in the air at Narayana Guru Samithi Layout near Chokkasandra under Hebbagodi police limits in the early hours of Thursday.

Uthappa Dorai, the security guard, fired in the air on Wednesday morning to scare off a 15-member gang which tried to rob steel and other construction material from the under-construction layout.

Dorai and his colleague were manning the area when they found the gate of the layout open sometime between 3.30 and 4 am. Soon, they saw the labourers screaming for help. The labourers told the guards that some 15 men had barged in, assaulted them and snatched their mobile phones and cash.

Dorai and his colleague hurried into the layout and saw some men moving around suspiciously. The intruders were trying to steal iron rods and other construction materials which were dumped in the layout.

Quick action

Dorai lost no time in firing seven rounds in the air, frightening the miscreants who fled the spot. Dorai and his colleague managed to chase down two of the robbers. They then called the police who rushed to the spot and during a search, found a goods van abandoned by the miscreants.

A senior police officer said that the vehicle bore a Tamil Nadu registration number. This is the third time that a robbery attempt was made at the layout. The first incident took place on September 3 and the second on September 14. “In all the three incidents, Dorai fired in the air to scare off the robbers,” he added.

Another officer said that Kishore, a miscreant who was hit by a bullet in the September 3 incident and sent to jail, would be taken into police custody and interrogated. “We hope to get details from him about the men involved in the latest incident,” he said.
