Time for some Tex-Mex

Fresh flavours

When Elizabeth Bowden-David and her husband Griffith David moved to India in 2005, they felt the absence of authentic Mexican food in the City.

They followed the hunch that other people in the City might also be feeling the same and started ‘Habanero’ to introduce the lively cuisine to Bangaloreans.

She says that Bangalore accepted the restaurant and its offerings even better than she had anticipated. “Tex-Mex cuisine is especially suitable to the Indian palate because of fresh flavours, spiciness, and abundant vegetarian options,” she says. The different offerings from the restaurant include classic Mexican dishes like ‘quesadillas’, ‘nachos’, ‘burritos’, ‘fajitas’, and ‘enchiladas’.

“Guests can select vegetarian or non-vegetarian fillings as they please. We also offer traditional cold beverages — such as margarita, sangria, and mojitos — that go well with the spices and cheese,” she says. Of the top-sellers in the menu, she says one of the specialties is ‘Tres Leches Cake’, a moist, milk-soaked vanilla butter cake. “We find that since Indians already have a taste for milk-based sweets, this dessert is especially enjoyed here,” she says.

Talking about the crowd at ‘Habanero’, Elizabeth says that place often sees a mixed crowd. “One table might be a corporate group on an outing, another table may be a family birthday party and a third might be a group of friends catching up over a meal. And with our pitcher deals and wide range of appetisers, the place suits a wide variety of budgets,” she details.

‘Habanero’ allows customers to personalise their food. “In fact we offer ‘guacamole’ made right before the guests’ eyes, so they can personalise the level of spiciness and flavour,” says Elizabeth. ‘Habanero’ is open from 11.30 am to 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm to 11 pm. The restaurant is open till 1 am on Friday and Saturday.

‘Habanero’ has three outlets in the City: Koramangala, Whitefield, and Indirangar. For details, call 9243405800
