Last Updated 22 September 2014, 19:30 IST

Azim Premji University plans to offer undergraduate course in science, arts and humanities subjects from next year wherein students will have freedom of choosing subject combinations from any of these fields.

Currently, the university offers Master’s degrees in education and development studies. The three-year course will be a residential programme where students will have to study foundational courses from a common curriculum besides having the option of specialising in a course or courses of their choice.

The specialisations on offer are social sciences (economics and political science), sciences (physics and biology) and humanities (literature, history and philosophy).

The common curriculum will consist of courses in creative expression through art, music and drama/ theatre, understanding India through its history and polity and future trends, and in critical reasoning, according to Azim Premji University School of Liberal Studies Director Venu Narayan.

“Rather than having only specialised understanding of subjects, we want students to have an understanding of broad complexities. A student will get the liberty to engage in a number of other endeavours such as getting a dual specialisation by adding a semester or a year if he or she wishes,” he added. The first batch will consist of 120 students selected through a written test.

Meanwhile, at the second convocation, held on Monday, 85 students from postgraduate batch of 2013 and 125 students from batch of 2014 received their degrees.
