Ill Satish pulls out of his event

Weightlifter Satish Sivalingham pulled out of his 77kg event on Tuesday morning with the Indian authorities saying the last-minute withdrawal was due to a bout of severe viral fever.

Satish, who won the Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold, did his mandatory weigh-in on Monday evening but chose not to compete at the Moonlight Festival Garden upon doctor’s advice.

“Satish has been suffering from a severe bout of viral fever and throat infection for the last couple of days,” Indian Chef de Mission Adille Sumariwala told Deccan Herald. “We did the weigh-in because we hoped he would recover in time for his event. This morning he was very sick.

“We took him to a hospital and the doctors adviced that he is not fit enough to compete. So we had no choice but to pull him out.”

When asked if there were any concerns with regards to doping and the withdrawal was a preventive measure, Sumariwala rubbished them saying WADA officials can test anyone anytime.

“The doping officials can knock at his door anytime. There are no issues with regards to doping.

“He won the CWG gold clean and this has nothing to do with doping. He was extremely sick and it made no sense to compete.”
