Cisco India unveils Smart City model

Giving impetus to India’s efforts to open up 100 smart cities, Cisco India on Tuesday unveiled Cisco Smart City model at its campus here demonstrating its digitisation prowess. 

The Cisco smart City is a futuristic initiative which will give boost to Digital India initiative where facilities like workplace, education, healthcare and citizen services are provided on a seamless single platform.

Unveiling the facility, Cisco Executive Vice-President for industry solutions and chief globalisation officer Wim Elfrink said the initiative will give a model for hassle free service delivery for citizen which will evolve into a new business model later. 

“The Cisco Smart City demonstrates all the technological capabilities Cisco has under its various global research and development centres. Here we have also put in place technologies developed in India so that it can further acclimatised to the situation,” he said.

“Smart city is a concept for sustainable development and Cisco gives a collaborative platform where all stakeholders can come together to provide a better living. Digitisation is not a new thing but started off 30 year back and now the movement is towards Internet of Everything where everything are connected and generate data,” he said.

He pointed out that development of nations depends upon how this data can be transformed into knowledge and into wisdom. “This will help us to take wise decision so that every sphere of life will have its impact. The digitisation will give value addition to economy. India will become a $600 billion economy once this digitisation process is rolled out,” he said.

Spread over 2.6 million square feet and designed as a campus-as-a-city, the facility offers thousands of Cisco employees a place to work, play and learn with a physical network infrastructure connecting devises like sensors, information access points and mobile devices, and with high degree of security.

During the launch, Cisco also demonstrated its collaboration with smart cities such as Barcelona, Spain and Canberra, Australia. 

Speaking at the function, Karnataka Government’s IT and BT secretary Srivatsa Krishna exhorted to customise the technologies for Indian situation. “We are looking for not routers and switches by technologies which are scalable and cost effective for the Indian situation. It should solve the problems faced both by the adminstration and citizens,” he said.
