Last Updated 23 September 2014, 19:55 IST

The City received this month’s highest rainfall of 79.2 mm in just four hours early Tuesday morning.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department data, the City recorded a total rain of 79.2 mm between 1.15 am and 4.40 am. However, HAL airport received three mm and Kempegowda International Airport received 5.2 mm, while GKVK Campus recorded 41.2mm and Yelahanka, 24.2 mm.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, IMD, Bangalore director B Puttanna, said that such heavy rainfall is common during September, the wettest month of the year. The rainfall received by the City was because of the presence of Clumino - Nimbus clouds. These are vertical clouds which form due to the increased maximum temperature and moisture in the atmosphere.

Due to the lack of wind the clouds did not move away. They remained stationed in one place and this lead to heavy rainfall in just some parts of the City, he explained.

He added that an upper air cyclonic circulation was hovering over Kumarin Area- Kanyakumari to Lakshwadeep area; under the influence of this most parts of south interior Karnataka, including Bangalore will experience heavy rainfall in the forth coming days. Very heavy rainfall is also forecast for October.

The normal rainfall Bangalore should have received from June 1, till September 23, is calculated to be 787.7mm; while the City has received 841 mm.

The BBMP control rooms were flooded with calls from various places across the City. Mayor N Shanthakumari and her deputy T Ranganna  attended more than 50 calls - 25 pertaining to tree fall, 12 of water entering into houses and waterlogging on roads in  KP Agrahara, Basaveshwaranagar, Okalipuram and Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

The worst-affected were the residents in Neelasandra, Anepalya and Lakshman Rao Nagar (LR Nagar), all coming under Shanthinagar Assembly constituency. More than 300 houses were flooded with rainwater mixed with sewage from the nearby stormwater drain.
