Women nail bronze in double trap

Last Updated 25 September 2014, 19:24 IST

The Indian women’s double trap team rescued the country from registering a second straight blank day in the shooting ranges, clinching a face-saving bronze here on Thursday.

After big guns Gagan Narang and Samresh Jung misfired in the 50M rifle prone and 25M standard pistol events respectively at the Ongnyeon International Range, the women claimed the double trap team bronze at the Gyeonggido Range to lift the shattered morale in the camp considerably.

Shagun Chowdhary, Shreyasi Singh and Varsha Varman totaled 279, finishing well behind gold medallists China (315) and runners-up South Korea (314) whose shooters turned the competition into a two-horse race for supremacy.

There was plenty of disappointment at Ongnyeon Range with London Olympics 10M air rifle bronze medallist Narang finishing a disappointing 14th in the qualification rounds. He appeared nowhere close to his best, the shock of an abject performance written all over his face.

Joydeep Karmakar fared relatively better, ending 10th, while Hariom Singh was way off target, signing of 29th.

The script was similar in the 25M standard pistol with the seasoned Samresh managing a poor 24th in the qualification rounds. Gurpreet Singh was fifth while Mahaveer Singh ended 17th.
