Month-long cleanliness drive from October 2

Mayor Mahabala Marla said that the Central government's 'Swachha Bharat Abhiyan' of initiating cleanliness drive in the surroundings will be launched in Mangalore on October 2. The drive will continue till October 31. 

Addressing a press meet, he said that if any organisation comes forward to take up the drive, the MCC will support them by providing needed equipment, gloves, and also transportation of the garbage to the landfill site. When residents of Bengre decided to clean the school premises, the MCC sent its vehicles and men to help them out on Sunday. 

The children of Saanidhya school will clean the surroundings on October 2. Along with this, Railways will start cleanliness drive in Mangalore Junction Railway Station and students of Fr Muller’s College will take up the drive in and around Kankanady and Valencia.  

The MCC also plans to recycle the plastics generated in the city. A firm from Tamil Nadu has already approached the MCC to collect plastics from the landfill site. At the same time, the MCC is planning to set up an electronic public toilet in major locations in the city. The pay-and-use toilet can also be used for advertisements, so that the MCC can fetch income. 

Dasara Kabaddi tourney

The Mayor said that the MCC in association with DK district Amateur Kabaddi Association wil organise Mangalore Dasara Kabaddi tournament at Urwa Market Maidan, from September 30. The tournament will conclude on October 2.

The tournament is being organised as a part of Dasara celebration for the first time in the history of Mangalore City Corporation. District-in-Charge Minister Ramanath Rai will inaugurate the tournament.

The winners in the men’s group will get Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000  and Rs 10,000 respectively and women’s group will get Rs 10,000, 7,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. 

International Kabaddi players Bhaskar Rai, B Amarnath Rai and Rathnakar Putran will be felicitated on the occasion. 

The Mayor said that the MCC employees and councillors will present a cultural programmes in front of the MCC during the Mangalore Dasara procession on October 4.
