Low winds keep the LED kites grounded

Colourful and innovative kites dotted the skies earlier in the day

Since it wasn’t windy enough, kites made of LED lights that were introduced during Dasara for the first time, had to stay put on the ground, much to the disappointment of the people who had gathered at Oval Ground, opposite Crawford Hall in the city on Tuesday.

As many as 10 LED kites had been brought from kite enthusiasts in the city, along with professionals from Bangalore, Maharashtra and Gujarat, on the opening day of the Kite Festival organised by Dasara Publicity and Kite Festival sub-committee. However, with no sufficient winds, all efforts made by kite flyers dampened the spirit of the organises and audience alike. Though a kite was flown, it failed to hover for long.

The kites in different designs and dimensions like ‘Wheels’ (7ft x 5ft) designed by V K Rao from Bangalore, ‘Made in India’ (5ft x 3ft) designed by Mysore Kite Club, Delta and Aeroplanes by Diganth Joshi and Jagruthi Joshi couple from Vadodara in Gujarat, and Ashok Shah from Pune in Maharashtra among several others were kept on display for sometime, following the failure of the show.

Joshi said the kites were designed using ripstop nylon cloth and controlled by nylon string. The tiny LED bulbs fixed on the kites are kept aglow with the help of detachable batteries. LED kites were first introduced in India in 2005, and have been becoming more popular with every passing years. Recently, the LED kites were flown during the exclusive festival held in Pune.

The LED kites are expected to dot the skies, if there is sufficient wind on Wednesday from 6.30 pm onwards at the same venue.

Earlier in the day, kites made of different designs like dragon, tri-colours, Goddess Chamundeshwari, eagle, tiger, ship, yakshagana artiste and others dotted the skies at Hotel Lalith Mahal Palace helipad, following the inauguration of the festival. Kites with the portraits of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Revenue and District in-charge minister V Sreenivas Prasad were the highlights of the fest.
