World Elders Day awards to be given today

On the eve of World Elders Day on October 1, Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree, on Tuesday, announced the list those selected for this year’s world elders day award. Briefing reporters, she said awards this year would carry cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. 

“The cash award has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Awards will be given to elders who have been exemplary in their contributions in various fields,” she said.

The awardees for this year are S Shankarnarayana Acharya (Arts), Hanumanthraya Manappa Poojari (Education), Dr M G Krishnamurthy (Social Service), Yamnuresh Biradar (writer), Pramila Nagaraju (Sports) and Leela R Hiremath (Law).

The government will also be giving an award to Senior Citizens Forum, an NGO based in Madikeri for their contribution to elders. The award ceremony will be held at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore at 11 am on October 1. The government will be launching 1090 helpline for elders in 12 additional districts on October 1, apart from existing ones in two districts of Bangalore Urban and Mysore.
