Interior designing is a profession with immense potential, especially for individuals with flair and passion for the field, writes Digant Sharma.

With technology and development in the new age, it is possible to realise every realistic ambition. The lifestyle and economic status of society has seen a major growing graph and this is one of the reasons that there are so many professional platforms created for youngsters to choose a career for themselves.

Architecture, engineering, medicine, accountancy, humanities and fine arts: Honours or a master’s degree in these disciplines were limited choices for the earlier generation to choose from and the prime focus always was to get a government job. Whereas the current scenario is totally different from the past and youngsters want to make a career in a field where they can look forward to be a self employed person with options of also getting a job in the private sector, specifically MNCs.

Globalisation

Globalisation has added a lot to the scenario and the transition of time is the evidence to prove that how things have changed in the last couple of decades. Today design is considered a high-end profession, which, at the end of the day, is getting you a good earning but also name and fame. Design does not have any thumb rule to be judged as right or wrong but the appreciation of the end product leads to the final outcome of whole process to be defined as good design or bad design.

An interior designer is expected to be an expert in three major streams i.e. design, construction and aesthetics. All three streams have their detailing involved in the form of interior and exterior for design, material and engineering for construction. Interior designing is considered to be a branch of architecture.Although in the contemporary format, even the field of architecture is considered to have a range of super specialisations.

Interior design caters to a target audience who are conscious about their standard of living and also need the spaces to reflect their personalities so the study of design does not only incorporate the technical knowledge of design and construction but  also needs the study of psychology of an individual as well as the masses.

In the academic arena, there are certain criteria to categorise the core fields of specialisations. For example, getting into the medical stream requires the base of physics, chemistry and biology.

No prerequisites

Similarly, the prerequisites of opting for engineering or architecture stream requires a base of physics, chemistry and mathematics. Sometimes it is observed that a student studying in class 10 is not mature enough to understand the importance of the marks scored.

The design field is free from the complexities and formalities of marks and there is no preconception of any educational limitations in terms of what stream the student had in senior secondary level. However a student needs to possess certain basic and essential elements and needs to be sure that he or she is not getting into it just for the ‘glamour’ of it.

He or she should consider it to be a very serious profession which can be turned into a opportunity of self employment. These elements should be rated in a customised manner and the student who is looking forward to make a career in design needs to make sure that the profession he or she is looking at is his or her cup of tea.
