Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha was released on bail from the Parappana Agrahara Central Prisons here on Saturday.

Jayalalitha, also All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)  chief, got the bail from the Supreme Court after spending 22 days in prison following a special court verdict here that sentenced her to four years’ imprisonment on September 27, 2014, in a disproportionate assets case.

The release of Jayalalitha witnessed emotional scenes with hundreds of AIADMK workers, including her successor Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his cabinet colleagues,  greeting her. Some touched her feet.

Thousands thronged the road outside the prison raising slogans to greet the former chief minister as she moved in her vehicle. She waved to the gathering. The other accused in the case, Sasikala Natarajan and J Ilavarasi,  travelled with her. V N Sudhakaran, the third accused in the DA case, was in a separate vehicle.

In the morning, at the 36th Additional City Civil Sessions court, the designated special court which tried the DA case, advocates from Tamil Nadu submitted the certified copy of the Supreme Court order granting bail. The advocates furnished eight sureties—two for each accused—as per the court’s conditions.

Gunajyothi Pughazhendi, wife of  Va Pughazhendi, AIADMK state secretary in Karnataka, and J Bharath, a resident of Doddatogur in Bangalore, stood surety for Jayalalitha. G Raju and Lakshmipathi, residents of Singapalya and Thyagaranagar in Bangalore, offered themselves as surety for Sasikala Natarajan, Lokesh S and M Anbambal for Sudhakaran, Va Pughazhendi and V Rajendran for Ilavarasi. They all submitted their property details valued at Rs 1 crore each.

The judge was satisfied with the documents and issued the bail order around 1:45 pm. The order was sent through a messenger who reached the prison premises around 2:45 pm.

When Jayalalitha walked out of the prison at 3:10 pm.The crowd erupted in joy on seeing their leader and showered rose petals on her car. The convoy zipped towards the U-turn to take the elevated expressway. Jayalalitha then took a special flight to Chennai from HAL airport at 4:15 pm.
