Humbled in Maharashtra and Haryana, the Congress on Sunday accepted defeat in the Assembly elections, admitting that “people voted for change”.

At the same time, Congress leaders went all out to deny a “Modi wave” in the polls, contending that the BJP should have got majority in Maharashtra, and not left looking for possible allies.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi issued brief statements conceding defeat and congratulating the BJP for its twin victories.

However, neither failed to point out that the people of Maharashtra had voted them to power for three consecutive terms and reposed faith in Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s leadership for a decade.

The AICC headquarters here wore a deserted look, barring the presence of those leaders tasked to speak to mediapersons.

There were red faces in the Congress as a group of party workers raised slogans demanding a larger role for Priyanka Gandhi, a virtual expression of no-confidence in her elder sibling Rahul’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Rahul said the party would “work hard on the ground to once again earn the confidence of the people”.
