Poilce focus on corruption in force

Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi on Monday urged people not to bribe policemen, and launched a campaign to inform that policemen do not have authority to allow or stop unauthorised construction.

Jung and Bassi said the campaign will prove to be an important step towards stopping corruption.

“We want to create awareness among general public that there is no authority with police officers to stop any unauthorised construction on their own,” Bassi said. He added that police can only stop construction work on the receipt of orders from the municipal corporation.

“Any victim of corruption can approach helpline number 9910641064, where one can not only just call and register a complaint, but also send a recorded audio or video clip if any policeman harasses a person or demands a bribe,” Bassi added.

Additional commissioners of police and deputy commissioners of police have also been told to brief their staff about the Vigilance Branch helpline number 1064 and action being taken against staff on receipt of complaints.

Meanwhile, keeping quiet on mysterious death of former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, Bassi defended his force.

“The investigation is on into the matter and we are coordinating with forensic team. It anything concrete comes out into the case, we will share it,” Bassi said.

The commissioner kept quite on police `negligence’ in the case. When questioned about it, he ignored the issue and repeated that an inquest was on. Bassi also said police are competent enough to carry out the probe.

Over the spate of attacks on policemen in the last few months, Bassi said they will launch special training sessions to deal with criminals.

“Our men are well-trained to deal with the criminals. But they need more refreshed training,” Bassi said. The concerned deputy commissioners of police have been asked to provide special training sessions from time to time.
