Ryots say price crash, officials say produce damaged

Last Updated 21 October 2014, 21:46 IST

Irked by the alleged dip in tomato prices, a section of farmers staged a protest at Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) premises, by emptying tomato crates, here on Tuesday.

However, official sources at APMC said that tomatos in the crate which were emptied, as a form of protest by some farmers, were damaged and not fit to be bought in the market.

According to Somshekar, a farmer from Talur village, Mysore taluk said that there was a sudden dip in tomato prices, which provoked the farmers to empty the crates and stage the stir. “Dealers at the market, quoted a price of Rs 30-50 per crate, which translated to a meagre price of Re 1 to 1.5 per kg. Angered by this, farmers emptied hundreds of crates at APMC premises and staged a protest,” he said.

He said that farmers in the region were encouraged by the good price for tomatoes in the region last year, and had shifted towards the cultivation of the same. However, the dip in prices angered the farmers,” he said. He demanded the State government to take measures, so that such instances of wastage of cultivated crops could be avoided.

However, official sources at APMC, who did not wish to be quoted, rubbished the allegations.

“There was a good flow of tomato at the APMC yard during the day. Most of the tomato was sold at a price of Rs three to four per kg. However, some tomato crates contained damaged tomatoes, spoilt due to rains during the course of the past week,” he said.

The emptied crates, were only a small portion of the tomato which had arrived at the APMC yard, he said.
