A song and dance about nothing

Last Updated 24 October 2014, 19:39 IST

Happy New Year
Hindi (U) ¬¬
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Jackie Shroff
Director: Farah Khan

Farah Khan throws a New Year party on Diwali. Bad timing. We forgive her. But her bash extends so deep into the night that it “sees the light of the day”. And the viewers demand three hours of their lives back.

Farah is in familiar ‘huge’ territory, though. The gloss, the glitz, the kitsch... and Shah Rukh Khan. Everything comes with the ‘gigantic’ tag, and Khan leads the pack with his eight-pack.

Meet his sidekicks: Sonu Sood, ex-armyman and an expert in blowing things up; Boman Irani, a professional vault-breaker and ‘local stud’ who gives neighbourhood aunties a reason to salivate every morning; Abhishek Bachchan, the tapori ever ready to slither down and do a snake dance; and Vivaan Shah, a cracker of a hacker.

Strangely, all of them have a mom or dad problem to fix. And of all of them have a bone to pick with Jackie Shroff, the diamond merchant with a heart harder than the stones he deals in.

Shah Rukh has been hot on Shroff’s heels for eight years, but smells a chance to get even with him only during the ‘World Dance Championship’ in Dubai.  Dance?

Enter bar dancer Mohini (Deepika Padukone) and Khan begins to see “booty” and “beauty” in every movement. The “teacher” and her team do a song and dance about “India waale” as they take on the deft Koreans. Patriotism is served up in colourful attire and even more colourful antics.

A diamond heist requires some nimble feet and fingers. Sigh, what we have here is a fumbling six trying to do their own Ocean’s Eleven.
