Koliwad panel to probe lake encroachment

 Legislative Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa on Monday constituted a house committee to inquire into encroachment of lakes in and around Bangalore.

The 11-member committee will be headed by Congress MLA K B Koliwad. The Speaker has directed that the panel submit its report along with recommendations in three months.

The JD(S) had raised the encroachment of lakes in and around Bangalore in the Legislative Assembly in July this year and had sought an inquiry on the money spent on development of  water bodies.

Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy had alleged that 1,039 acres of lake land have been encroached upon between 2006 and 2011 in and around Bangalore and the market value of the encroached land was estimated at a whopping Rs 24,000 crore.

The members of the legislature panel include N Y Gopalkrishna, N A Haris, K Sudhakar, B R Yavagal, E Tukaram (all Congress),  H D Kumaraswamy and K Gopalaiah (both JD-S), Suresh Kumar, M Krishnappa (both BJP) and K S Puttanaiah  (Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha).
