From hotel business, Ullas Gadiyar has  turned his interest towards farming and has proved that too in Hejamady.

While involved in hotel business he was quick enough to identify his calling and gave his complete self to it. Now his son Anand too assists him in his farming activities.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Gadiyar said “I was into hotel business 57 years ago. However, owing to shortage of labourers, I left the business and started agriculture in the available land.”

“On the recommendations of scientists from Brahmavar Krishi Vigyan Kendra, I planted banana plants. I started with 24 plants. Now, there are 150 plants in my garden,” he said.

Japan variety of Cavendish and other local varieties have been grown by Gadiyar. “Farming is fascinating. The only thing is that it requires continuous hard work and dedication. I used to find it difficult initially. Now, there is good demand for banana raceme. In fact, a few people book in advance,” he said.

In the available land, he also grows black pepper, okra, ridge gourd and yard long beans. “I do not use any chemical fertiliser. I take care of my plants using organic manure,” said Gadiyar.

At a time when youth move away from agriculture, 28-year-old Anand Gadiyar is following the foot steps of his father. After completing electrical diploma, he was working in Suzlon as a AC mechanic. Later, he quit his job to become self-reliance and started helping his father and is continuing farming.” In fact father-son duo also disseminate information to other farmers.

“One should have interest in farming to make it a profitable venture. It gives satisfaction in life,”  he added.
