CNC demands union territory status to Kodava land

Last Updated 24 November 2014, 18:58 IST

Codava National Council (CNC) President N U Nachappa has urged the government to accord union territory status to Kodava land.

Addressing Kodava National Day organised by CNC here on Monday, he said that Kodavas should be considered as tribals. The government should not implement Kasturirangan report on conservation of Western Ghats. “If Kodagu is brought under union territory, then development works will be accelerated and additional funds will be released to the district. More than 300 entrepreneurs and industrialists have encroached acres of land in Kodagu district. The government should clear the encroached land.

However, officials are harassing Kodavas for failing to furnish documents for the land they possess.”

“We have been opposing Kasturiragan report since the recommendation was submitted to the government. However, the officials are trying to clear villagers in the name of ecologically sensitive areas. There is a need to fight unitedly against such move of the government,” he said.

The CNC has been fighting for the cause of Kodavas for the last 23 years. It has been seeking protection to Kodava land. However, a few are trying to mislead the people.
Zilla Panchayat Members Maneyapanda Kanthi Sathish, Bollamma, Nanaiah, CNC leaders Kaliyanda Prakash, Pullengada Naresh, Pullera Swathi Kalappa, Mathanda Kanda Uthayya, and others were present. The Kodavas in their traditional attire took part in a procession.
