Made Snana: Pejawar seer blames progressive mutts

Pejawar mutt seer Vishweshatheertha Swami on Wednesday blamed the “adamant attitude” of the heads of progressive mutts for the government not considering the concept of ‘Ede Snana’ replacing ‘Made Snana’.

The seer told reporters here that he was always against Made Snana and had instead recommended Ede Snana, a ritual involving devotees rolling over plantain leaves with ‘prasdam’.

He said the government had already agreed to the substitute arrangement, but the adamant seers of progressive mutts discarded the proposal, he alleged. Brahmins should also stop practising Made Snana, he added. Vishweshatheertha said the government should clearly differentiate between beliefs and blind beliefs. “There is confusion over beliefs and superstitious beliefs. Evil practices such as untouchability and the Devadasi system should be banned, he said.

People’s representatives, politicians and religious leaders should come together and discuss the issue. A committee should be set up to come out with specified differentiation between faith and evil practices supporting superstitious beliefs, he said.

On Day 2
More than 600 devotees performed Made Snana for the second day at Kukke Subrahmanya on Wednesday.
