NorthEast slam three past Chennaiyin FC

Last Updated 27 November 2014, 17:29 IST

Chennaiyin FC’s aspirations of qualifying for the semifinals of the Indian Super League took a blow as they went down tamely to hosts NorthEast United FC here on Thursday.

Unbeaten in their previous seven matches, the table-toppers, who had 19 points from 10 games, were tipped to have an easy evening against Joan Capdevila’s men.

But without the influence of star midfielder Elano and forward John Mendoza, their run came to an end in the most stunning fashion.

After Durga Boro struck the first blow for the hosts, a brace from Massamba Sambou condemned the visitors to an embarrassing defeat. NorthEast, who hadn’t won a game since they beat Mumbai a month ago, are now fifth in the table with 13 points from 11 games.

Delhi take on Mumbai
Delhi Dynamos will look to redeem themselves in front of the home crowd when they take on Mumbai City FC in the league match of Indian Super League (ISL) at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday.

Dynamos’ chances of making the semifinals appear tough with their 10 points so far. In their 10 fixtures, they have registered two wins to be placed seventh on the points table.

Mumbai, who have failed to win a single match on road, are a shade better at sixth place with 12 points. The side coached by Peter Reid couldn’t score in six of their ten matches despite boasting some of the big names of likes of Nicolas Anelka and Freddie Ljungber.

Mumbai are on four-match losing streak and are coming into this contest following their 3-0 drubbing at the hands of FC Chennaiyin at home. Worse, they would be without the services their star strikers Anelka and Andre Moritz, both nursing injuries.
