Obscenities mark Pak hockey win celebration

Last Updated 13 December 2014, 20:26 IST

Pakistan produced one of the worst post-match celebrations ever seen on a hockey pitch, with their players hurling abuses and making obscene gestures towards the crowd on Saturday.

Soon after edging past India 4-3 in an intensely fought Champions Trophy semifinal at the Kalinga Stadium here, the Pakistan players gathered, with most of them ripping off their T-shirts and using the choicest of expletives.

Their actions were so distasteful that coach Shahnaz Sheikh had to intervene and calm things down, even slapping reserve goalkeeper Ali Amjad. In a statement, FIH, the world hockey governing body, said the celebrations didn’t warrant any stern action because it was just a reaction.

“At the conclusion of the semifinal match between India and Pakistan, which was won by Pakistan, the celebration of the Pakistani team contained some behaviour that warranted further investigation by me as Tournament Director,” said Wiert Doyer.

“As a result, I have spoken to the Head Coach of the Pakistan team, Shahnaz Sheikh, and told him that the behaviour of Pakistan players went beyond what is acceptable to standards of the FIH. The behaviour in question concerned many members of the Pakistan team. It is difficult to find any particular miscreant, and it is possible that the behaviour of the players may have been a reaction.”
