A 70-year-old retired court officer was killed and his wife sustained severe injuries when they were attacked by a man at their residence in Ittamadu on Wednesday.

According to the police, Raghavendra Rao, 70, a retired court officer, lived with his wife Sudha Kumari, 68, in an independent house in Banashankari.

The intruder attacked the couple with a hammer. Madhusudhan succumbed to the blow on his head while Sudha  sustained severe injuries. The assailant left with Sudha’s 30-gram gold chain. All other valuables were found to be in tact. There were no signs of forced entry into the house or ransacking, said the police.

Their son, Madhusudhan visited his parents every evening to make sure they had taken their medication and to help them in domestic chores. When he called them on Wednesday, there was no response. He grew suspicious and rushed to the house. He found the main door ajar and his parents lying in a pool of blood.

He rushed them to the hospital and informed the police. Sudha Kumari is being treated at the Deve Gowda Hospital and is said to be out of danger.

The couple has two sons - Madhusudhan, a techie in the City and the other is in Singapore. The couple had briefly moved in to Madhusudhan’s flat in Ittamadu. Unable to cope with the apartment culture, they moved back to their independent house. The police suspect the involvement of a man who often visited Rao's house for cleaning. A search is on to trace him, said the police.
