In a seven-page open letter, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to head the high-level committee for development of Mumbai proposed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“You are a strong proponent of good governance, Mr Prime Minister. May I request you in the name of good governance not to accept this responsibility for the development of
Mumbai and to place it squarely where it belongs: on the shoulders of the chief
minister, the government and people of Maharashtra,” Pawar said in the letter to Modi, which was released to the media.

The copies of the letter were marked to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete and Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Prakash Javadekar.

In the letter, the former Union minister and former Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said: “To suggest that there are no thinkers, visionaries or planners in Maharashtra is an insult to Maharashtra.,” Pawar said.
